Glass units

The correct choice of glazing unit is a crucial factor in the overall quality of the window. As standard, we offer glazing units with energy-saving (selective) glass for our windows, but the glazing unit can also have other characteristics requested by the customer.

Windows can be manufactured with insulating glass units that have solar control properties without reducing energy-saving features, preventing overheating in living spaces during summer heat, or making the glass safer by choosing toughened or laminated glass.

Double and triple glazing units

A glazing unit consists of two or more panes of glass that are hermetically sealed together. The glazing units are filled with 90% argon, which significantly improves the window’s thermal insulation. The panes are firmly attached to the spacer bar using butyl sealant and adhesive mastic. The butyl sealant makes the glazing unit airtight, preventing external moisture from entering the unit.

The inter-chamber spaces of the glass units are dried with an absorbent contained within a special spacer bar, which absorbs the moisture.

Energy-saving glass

In Nordic climates, triple-glazed units are predominantly used in infill elements and are the standard solution for energy-saving (selective) glazing, with the spaces between the panes filled with argon gas.

Selective glass surface coating

The glass unit is mostly the largest part of the window and therefore the entirety of the window's thermal insulation to a significant degree depends on the glass unit. Nowadays, glass units that are used in Estonia as standard are Low-emissivity energy-saving glass.

The selective coating reflects outgoing heat back into the room, thereby helping to reduce heat loss. The selective coating does not change the tint of the window glass or reduce light transmission.

Argon

The glazing units are filled with argon to a level of 90%, which significantly improves the window’s thermal insulation.

Argon is an inert gas with lower thermal conductivity than air. This means that heat moves more slowly in argon, preventing room heat from escaping in winter. Argon is odourless and non-toxic and is hermetically sealed between glass panes. Argon has been used in the window industry for decades.

Splinters

A spacer is an element located on the edge of a glass unit that keeps the panes at the correct distance within the unit.

The choice is an aluminium spacer bar, which is suitable for windows where thermal insulation is not a priority and the deciding factor is only the favourable price, or the hybrid material known as the „warm edge" spacer bar. Chromatech Ultra.

Windows with Chromatech Ultra as the spacer have better thermal insulation for the entire window and a significantly lower chance of condensation forming on the bottom glass surface of the window.

Three types of solar control glass

For rooms where solar energy and light can be disruptive, or where there is a risk of overheating, solar control glass can be ordered for windows. By using solar control glass on the south and west sides of a building, excessive overheating of rooms can be prevented.

Solar control glass is divided into three main types: body-tinted glass, reflective glass, and transparent multifunctional glass. Solar control glass reduces the passage of solar energy (g-value) and helps prevent rooms from overheating. By using solar control glass as the outer pane, the insulating glass unit can be assembled in combination with energy-efficient glass, which in turn ensures expected thermal insulation.

Three main types of solar control glass

Neutral-looking

There is a choice of solar control glass of varying strengths. Their appearance is like that of „standard" insulating glass units, but a special coating reduces the transmission of solar energy.

Of the solar protection glass options, on these glass units higher light transmission (LT%) when mass-coloured or reflective glass.

Mass-coloured glass

Available Hall yes Bronze Thicker glass provides a darker tone and better energy efficiency, but lets in less light than neutral-coloured solar control glass.

Tinted glazing is an important design feature for the entire building and offers more privacy than internal spaces when it is darker outside compared to the interior light.

Reflective glazing

Mirrored windows are an important design element for the entire building, and they provide more privacy when it's darker inside than outside.

Noise-cancelling glasses

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link

Unwanted sounds, or noise, are a major stressor, particularly in homes. This is precisely why, in environments with high noise levels, it is advisable to choose a solution that ensures better sound insulation.

Depending on the need, glass panes have different combinations to achieve the desired sound insulation.

When soundproofing, the first thing to remember is that the construction is only as soundproof as its weakest link. In other words, there's no point in having a soundproof glazing unit with good properties if the frame doesn't prevent sound transmission. PLASTO's frame and sash profiles have very good soundproofing characteristics, and by combining them with a glazing unit suitable for the specific needs, we can produce windows with soundproofing properties that meet the customer's expectations.

The sound-insulating properties of a double-glazed unit can be improved by installing glass panes of different thicknesses, using spacer bars of different widths, and by using laminated glass.

The best option for achieving sound insulation is to use glass laminated with special acoustic film.

Laminated glass can also be combined with other types of glass in a glazed unit, such as solar control and energy-efficient glass, thereby achieving glazed units which, in addition to effective sound insulation, offer good solar protection and thermal insulation that meets today's standards.

Safety glass

Toughened and laminated safety glass

If safety is important to you, then choose for your windows hardened or with laminated glass Tempered glass. Safety glass helps you protect yourself and your family from possible injuries caused by glass breakage. Safety glass also prevents unwanted attacks by burglars and intruders. Tempered and laminated glass help create a safe and secure home.

Safety glass is specially treated glass that makes it tougher and more shatter-resistant. The main types of safety glass are tempered and laminated glass. Safety is ensured by both the overall strength of the glass and its properties after breakage. Depending on the risk and accessibility, safety glass is used differently in glazing units.

Toughened glass

Toughened glass is heated to over 600 degrees Celsius during the manufacturing process and then rapidly cooled. This process makes the glass up to five times stronger than ordinary glass.

Tempering affects the fracture structure of glass, and when the stress is released, the glass breaks into small, blunt-edged pieces, which prevent serious injuries. Tempering is necessary to ensure personal safety and to prevent thermal breakage.

PVB film

Laminated safety glass

Laminated glass consists of two or more glass panes bonded together PVB film The glass is autoclaved under high pressure. When the glass breaks, it maintains its integrity and therefore does not fall out of the opening. The biggest advantage of laminated glass: in situations where the glass needs to remain in place after breaking (e.g., to prevent falling), laminated glass is the right choice. The PVB interlayer also blocks UV radiation and improves sound insulation. Laminated glass gets its safety properties during the lamination process. Two or more panes of glass are laminated together with a PVB film. The film is fused with the glass layers under high pressure and at high temperatures.

The PVB film makes laminated safety glass a tough and shatter-resistant glass. If the glass is overloaded, it breaks similarly to normal glass, but unlike normal glass, the shards do not scatter but remain attached to the PVB film. The glass unit cracks but does not shatter into pieces, thereby reducing the risk of potential cuts. Thanks to the PVB film, the glass unit also stays in the frame, thus reducing the risk of falling out of a window, for example. In the event of glass breakage, the shards remain stuck to the film, reducing the likelihood of life-threatening injuries.

Decorative glass

Decorative glass and different types of glass

A corresponding ornament is pressed onto one side of patterned decorative glass. The result is achieved by passing hot glass through corresponding rollers. This produces glass with very different surface designs.
