INSULATED GLASS UNIT

An insulated glass unit (IGU) is made up of two or more glass panes that are hermetically sealed. There is air or gas between the glass panes and the panes are joined by a spacer, usually made of aluminium. The panes are affixed to the aluminium spacer by butyl and a sealing compound (resin based mastic). Butyl mass makes the IGU airtight, preventing humid outside air from entering the unit. The butyl seal is applied on the aluminium spacer and between the panes. Thus the butyl seal prevents thermal bridging, otherwise the aluminium spacer would conduct cold to the inner pane and produce condensate on the glass surface. The air or gas between the panes is dried with a special desiccant inside the spacer which absorbs moisture.

Several different types of glass may be used in an IGU, depending on the purpose of the window: patterned glass, laminated glass, tempered glass, glass of different structure, etc. Plasto can offer a wide array of insulated glass units.
